Just an fast update on my trip to Jordan and Amman today. Arrived from Eilat to Akaba 14JD for the taxi from the jordanian border to Akaba for a party of 4, I can confirm that there is a guy who decides all the taxi prices, expect around 10JD for solo travelers.
Bus from Akaba to Amman was only 8,8JD departing from the central buss office several times a day. Seems to be no regular bus directly to Petra from there from rumors, didn't check myself , one traveler told me some guy had waited 2 days for that bus. The people we met in Amman were friendly and genuine, and the prices are fair budget option dorm for around 5JD, or single room for not much more.
Unfortunately we ran into some shady characters and long story short were blackmailed by our taxi driver for JD for a handful of beers.
Thanks to a visit to the local police station recklessly the policeofficers later arranged for the accused blackmailer to drive us to the central police station, even after several pleads for our own safety, thus making us worried enough to pay up , the guy settled for 85JD. Nightclubs are double up as a brothel where you pick up girls. They are not for the western tourists. You were lucky got off lightly. I got caught in this situation even in London Soho ,in Hongkong where I taught i was going to end up minced meat in a dim sim.
I am glad you mentioned. If you want a beer should cost 3 jod and a glass of good local wine 5 jod. Only tourists frequented places in downtown Amman are safe and sure where you get value for money. In downtown Amman alcoholic drinks available at tourists a hang outs. I am happy to mention a couple of places if any one wants to know.
